GEMMA BROCKIS - IMMERSIVE
Gemma has been working at the new edge of immersive theatre since 2000, when she formed Shunt with nine friends. Their multi-award winning new form revolutionised British Theatre:
An astounding piece of theatre - an immersive experience. Radical. Original. Incredible.
TIME OUT
To say that it was exciting just wouldn't do justice to the experience. Your preconceptions were forcibly rearranged.
TOM MORRIS (Director of War Horse)
The whole thing felt like being inside the head of a drunken genius.
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
Shunt pioneered what came to be known as immersive theatre.
WIRED
The most innovative theatre company in Britain.
THE GUARDIAN
Their lead venue was held in 90,000 sq ft of Victorian Railway Arches in London Bridge, where they made large-scale immersive work for the National Theatre, and ran the iconic Shunt Lounge Nightclub.
The best bar in London.
THE EVENING STANDARD
During this period, they held a second central London space - a warehouse in Southwark in which they created their final stand-alone immersive show - MONEY - for which their build a Victorian ‘Steam Machine’ with glass floors and ceilings - giving the audience multiple perspectives onto the action as the space transformed around them.
Gemma shared the artistic direction of the company. She co-directed some of the show and performed in all of them.
Developing as a freelance director and actor post-shunt, her work has been commissioned by the RSC, Buenos Aires Fashion Week, hotels, museums… and has toured to Japan, Australia, and within Europe.
This is bold, brilliant work. An almost orgiastic visual experience.
THE STAGE
She is expert at devising with large casts, a skill which she shares at the top London Conservatoires (RADA, Guildhall, LAMDA) with young actors.
